Coping in the chair: The validation of the Monitoring Blunting Dental Scale

چکیده
This accepted manuscript has been modified slightly from the format in which it was originally submitted (i.e. tables and figures have been inserted into the main text). The monitoring-blunting theory of coping suggests that when faced with a threatening situation, individuals can respond by either monitoring or avoiding (blunting) threatening information. The current study sought to validate a scale of children's preferences for monitoring or blunting in dental situations (the Monitoring Blunting Dental Scale or MBDS). The psychometric characteristics of the scale were assessed in a sample of 240 New Zealand children aged 11–13. Reliability was adequate for both monitoring (= .74) and blunting (= .76) subscale scores. Convergent validity was indicated by strong correlations (> .6) between the measure's subscales and those of a related scale, although discriminant validity with respect to dental anxiety was problematic for the blunting subscale. Exploratory factor analysis supported a two-factor monitoring-blunting model, although confirmatory factor analysis indicated reasonable but imperfect fit for this model, SBχ 2 (251) = 510.7, p < .001, RMSEA = .066. We reflect on conceptual issues which may underlie the difficulties experienced here and elsewhere in developing psychometrically sound measures of Miller's blunting construct, and suggest that the monitoring subscale of the study scale may be most useful to other researchers.

Exposure therapy outcome in spider phobics: effects of monitoring and blunting coping styles.
The present study examined whether monitoring (i.e. seeking out threat-related information) and blunting (i.e., avoiding threat-related information) coping styles affect therapy outcome. The sample consisted of 36 spider phobics who underwent one 2.5 hr session of exposure in vivo. Monitoring and blunting were assessed with the Miller Behavioural Style Scale (MBSS) at two points in time: before...

Background: Systematic and purposeful study of self-efficacy beliefs of Iranian nurses in the face of occupational stressors requires understanding the importance of studying this issue and then having a suitable tool to measure it in this group. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the short form of Occupational Coping Self-Efficacy for Nurses Scale (OCSE-N) among Iranian...

متن کاملTranslation and validation of Persian version of Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+)
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Being able to measure dental anxiety and fear is a necessary prerequisite for studying and understanding the nature and consequences of this common fear. Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+) is the latest scale presented for the assessment of dental anxiety, but it has never been applied in Iran. The aim of this study was t...
متن کاملCoping strategies in anxious surgical patients
BACKGROUND Anaesthesia and surgery provoke preoperative anxiety and stress. Patients try to regain control of their emotions by using coping efforts. Coping may be more effective if supported by specific strategies or external utilities. This study is the first to analyse coping strategies in a large population of patients with high preoperative anxiety. METHODS We assessed preoperative anxie...
